Usability challenges of new Web
technologies
Designing usable Web-based applications
|
August 29
While user needs essentially remain constant, Web technology is changing rapidly, affecting expectations and behaviour. Recent and emerging advances in Web technology - often referred to as Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 - are changing the way people use the Web.
The notion of a website as a taxonomy-based, fixed hierarchy of pages which a user “visits” – starting at the “Home page” – has gone forever. Websites are fragmenting into behind-the-scenes Web services, loosely tied together by rich interactive applications, in response to immediate user behaviour and statistical data about mass behaviour. Networking is becoming the dominant feature of the Web – networking of individuals, groups, applications, computing power and data. Navigation and meaning "emerge" through tagging, social interaction and the "semantic Web."
To take account of changing user expectations, traditional usability design and evaluation techniques need to be adapted to the new technologies. This interactive one-day workshop will prepare you for the new techniques, ensuring your organization keeps ahead of the curve and maintains a focus on user needs, goals, tasks and behaviour. |

, September 5
As Web technology matures, more people are expecting
to complete online transactions with the same ease and success they
are used to in face-to-face situations. Government and businesses
are migrating services to the Web to improve workforce productivity
and reduce costs, but migrating services online creates new design
challenges.
This workshop will explore a number of issues, tips
and techniques to make your organization’s online services
more successful. It explores the entire dialog between the service
provider and the customer looking at information architecture, providing
tools at the point of need, supporting “deep linking”
to task relevant information from other providers, managing user
expectations, personalizing services, maintaining a context for
the user so they always know where they are, plus building and maintaining
a sense of trust, privacy and security.
Workshop participants will engage in live usability
testing, mini-heuristic reviews of Web pages that participants bring
to the session, seeing websites from the perspective of the user,
and understanding the difference between user-centred versus usage-centred
design.
During the course of the workshop, we’ll compare
and contrast some industry “best practices” with some
of the “scariest” Web services out there and develop
a checklist of practical design principles that will ensure your
success. Our “Designing Usable Web-based Applications ” practical
workshop will prepare you to provide high-value services that enable
users to fulfill their goals effectively and efficiently.
